In Hosea's day the Israelites were compromising their allegiance to Jehovah. Instead of trusting Him exclusively they were buying into the values of the nations around them. They sought to cover their bases by worshipping the gods of other nations as well as Jehovah. They sought their own prosperity through evil plots, violence, fraud, theft and murder.
What did this look like from God's perspective? God gives several verbal pictures... and overheated oven, a spoiled cake and a stupid pigeon.
Human efforts at life apart from devotion to God are doomed to failure. The only solution is a whole hearted return to the one true God.
