The old gospel song says, "it's just Jesus and me for each tomorrow..." For individualistic Americans this often means they don't need anyone else. They have their private relationship with Jesus and they don't necessarily need any other Christians.
But Paul tells the Philippians that the work of Christ should be a model for them. Knowing Christ means we have a new relationship with the other followers of Jesus. We are made for community and fellowship - not to be loners.
